The region is famous for its
Cognac and Pineau production.
There are many tiny villages and
hamlets to explore. Quaint
chateaux are common. Local
delicacies include mussels in
cream, goats cheese, honey and
cake with angelica. Swimming,
fishing, horse riding, golf, tennis
and rowing are all available
during the summer months in the
local area. There are also many
lovely country walks all year
round. The landscape is gently
rolling and ideal for cycling. We
work with a British owned
company called Bike hire direct
who can rent you bikes for all the
family, tag alongs and child seats
and they deliver to your cottage
The popular seaside resorts around
La Rochelle such as the beaches of
Fouras and Chatelaillon and La
grand plage beach on the Ils de
oleron are only about an hours
drive away. The historic towns of
Cognac (with distillery tours such as
Hennessey and Remy Martin) and
Saintes (with its roman ruins) are
even closer.
Futuroscope a visual
theme park at Poitiers, the wine
chateaux of
Angouleme, Niort and Rochefort
are also all within travelling
distance. There is the renowned
animal conservation park at Royan
and a superb new
aquarium at La
Rochelle to name just a few of the
things there are to visit.

Since our guests all have young
evenings are often spent of
wine under the stars and pleasant
company - it's a night out without
having to actually go out ! Since there
are just six cottages all the guests find
they usually have quite a lot in
common, so many an evening is spent
sharing a bottle of local wine you
have discovered with your
neighbours. Since Wendy is a
registered child minder (and mother)
you can rest assured your children
will be safely looked after if you do
decide to spend an evening out at one
of the many restaurants in St Jean
Our family friendly gites in the Charente Maritime region of Sw France are very centrally located for all the main towns. La
Rochelle, Royan and Rochefort on the coast and Poitiers, Angouleme and Niort inland are all just an easy one hours drive away
at most. Saintes and Cognac are closer still and have plenty to keep both adults, children and toddlers occupied and entertained.
Even Brdeaux with its world famous vineyards and wineries are just a 1hr30 drive away. Click on the links at the bottom of the
page to find out more.

The Charente Maritime has literally hundreds of miles of beaches, all with soft sand and most with sheltered shallow waters,
perfect for young children; there are also miles of beaches along the islands of Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oleron and Ile d'Aix which have
some great waves for the older children to body surf
